Observation Narrative
A short, steep, thickly vegetated bluff bordering Mattaponi River floodplain. Large beech and white oak dominate the overstory, while mountain-laurel forms a dense, evergreen shrub layer. The position of this vegetation on a steep, sheltered, mesic bluff may have protected it from historic fires, allowing beech to attain dominance.
