Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot is a wind-stunted forest overwhelmingly dominated by Quercus rubra (canopy), Acer pensylvanicum (understory), and Dennstaedtia punctilobula (herb), but with fairly high richness of low-cover herbs. The site is near the lower-elevation limits of red oak-dominated forest on the crest of Great North Mountain. It is the prevalent type along the crest near Elliott Knob but transitions to the south to a more mixed oak-hickory forest with lusher, more mesophytic herb layer. Considerable coarse woody debris is present from apparently natural mortality of old oaks and more recent wind storms. American chestnut was probably an important canopy associate of red oak prior to the arrival of the chestnut blight nearly 100 years ago.
