Observation Narrative
The sample captures a yellow birch-dominated forest in a bouldery, north-facing ravine on the upper slope of Big Mountain. The plot center line runs down the bottom of the ravine and encompasses 10 m of slope on either side. Boulders and rocks, with litter or moss cover, dominate the ground surface. Soil samples collected have extraordinarily low pH and base cation levels (except iron and aluminum). Ferns dominate the herbaceous stratum. Local areas of seepage are present in ravine bottom, and some of the boulder-covered slope on the west side of the plot may have a seasonally perched water table. This may account for the abundance of Osmunda cinnamomea in the ravine, although this fern extends well up onto well-drained slopes and occurs on other nearby sites that lack seepage. Overall, this forest is best treated as terrestrial-upland vegetation with small wetland inclusions.
0-4 cm: leaf litter (variable depth and cover)
4+ cm: medium brown clay loam
Ground covered with large rocks and boulders over most of sample area. Soil collected from tip-up mound.
