Observation Narrative
A fairly mature, mixed white oak-northern red oak-hickory forest on a gentle, submesic upland at the top of a ravine slope. Compared to plot FLUV010, which is located on a drier ridge ca. 0.3 km to the east, this stand has a more mixed overstory, lacks Quercus montana (dominant in FLUV010), has an understory of flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) and has more than twice the total species richness, including a number of low-cover herbs. Oak recruitment is generally poor, with Nyssa sylvatica and Carya ovalis most abundant in sub-canopy tree layers.
