Observation Narrative ? Overstory is dominated by an even-age cohort of Pinus rigida, which regenerated following cutting and burning. Quercus montana and Quercus coccinea share dominance of a slightly shorter, subcanopy layer, while Nyssa sylvatica greatly dominates the general understory and ericaceous species (Kalmia latifolia, Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium pallidum) dominate the shrub and herb layers. Young recruitment of Pinus rigida is completely lacking, and the likely successional trajectory is toward increased abundance of oaks and Nyssa.
