Observation Narrative
Plot captures a savanna-like stand of short, gnarled, northern red oak on a south-facing, strongly convex upper slope. The vegetation is a classic high-elevation red oak forest with an open, wind-pruned, somewhat savanna-like structure. Shrubs are patchy and areas covered by dense graminoids (particularly Carex pensylvanica and Deschampsia flexuosa) and the fern Dennstaedtia punctilobula are prevalent. Prunus serotina is the most important canopy associate and Hamamelis virginiana dominates the shrub patches. This stand has likely been subject to multiple historical disturbances including logging, fires, and livestock grazing.
