Observation Narrative
Plot captures a xeric oak / heath forest with some pines on a very steep, rocky, convex side slope. The plot is located in an area with small outcrops and some soil development; adjacent are several small, thinly vegetated talus openings. For the most part, the trees are small and coppice sprouts are prevalent, suggesting historical logging. The presence of regularly scattered Pinus rigida suggests that fire has been an ecological factor in the past. Small trees of Betula lenta are particularly abundant around the outcrops at the downslope end of the plot. This plot has unusually high species richness for an oak/heath forest.
