Observation Narrative
The plot was placed in a chestnut oak / heath forest on the gentle brow of Brushy Mountain, just below its crest. The vegetation is typical of much of the crest and upper west flank of the mountain north of Laurel Creek. Based on the number of root sprouts, American chestnut was an important tree on this site prior to the arrival of the blight. Currently, there is less Acer rubrum and much greater oak recruitment in the understory than in most oak forests of the region. Clones of several deciduous ericads variably dominate a low shrub layer in the stand; the plot is located in an area where Leucothoe recurva is especially abundant.
