Observation Narrative
The broad, convex ridge of Brushy Mountain west of Rt 611 is covered by an even-aged, mixed stand of relatively young (< 40 cm DBH) oaks that likely regenerated following clearcutting and is now being rapidly invaded by younger cohorts of hickory, red maple, black gum, and white pine. The sampled stand is co-dominated by Quercus montana and Q. coccinea, with scattered Q. alba, Q. velutina, and Carya glabra also present. Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, and Oxydendrum arboreum are the leading understory dominants while Vaccinium pallidum contributes low, patchy shrub cover.
