Observation Narrative
Plot is representative of dry, open, graminoid-rich oak-hickory forests occurring frequently on the upper east flank of Shenandoah Mountain at middle elevations. The sampled stand is somewhat unusual in having minimal deer herbivory damage, with many herbs attaining significant cover. White oak, which occurs just outside the plot, is somewhat under-represented in the sample. The overstory is composed almost entirely of medium- to large-diameter oaks. Oak recruitment is essentially lacking and the understory is overwhelmingly dominated by small- to medium-diameter hickories. Lack of a distinct shrub layer, as well as tree saplings < 5 cm dbh, in much of the stand may be an artifact of past livestock grazing.
