Observation Narrative
Quercus rubra - dominated forest on a rocky, north-facing slope. Oak recruitment is poor and mesophytic trees (Acer rubrum, A. pensylvanicum, Betula lenta, and Magnolia fraseri) dominate the understory. High cover of loose boulders and stones, as well as a dense mantle of organic matter and roots, appears to constrain herbaceous cover and diversity.
