Observation Narrative
The plot is representative of a mixed oak-hickory forest on a gentle upper slope of Brushy Mountain. Oaks (Quercus velutina, Q. montana, Q. alba) are restricted to the canopy, with younger recruitment of Carya ovalis and Acer rubrum contributing the majority of the stem density in the stand. The vegetation is surprisingly species-rich and contains many low-cover forbs despite rather sparse herbaceous cover.
