Observation Narrative
At this site, the Appalachian Trail traverses a narrow, xeric ridge crest with a thick mantle of organic soil overlying loose stones. Vegetation is a stunted, oligotrophic forest of small-diameter (< 40 cm DBH) oaks (mostly Quercus montana and Q. coccinea) over an extremely dense and continuous shrub layer of Rhododendron catawbiense. Abundant coarse woody debris from blow-downs cover the forest floor. Sampling was accomplished by utilizing a long, narrow plot configuration (10 x 40 m), with the long dimension running parallel to and next to the trail, which made it possible to penetrate the very dense and thicket-like vegetation from a number of points. This community continues down the north slope of Brushy Mountain, but its full extent could not be determined on the ground.
