Observation Narrative
This plot is located on the upper north slope of Brushy Mountain above the head of Marchant Creek. Here, dense colonies of Rhododendron maximum extend continuously from the bottom of the small cove below to the crest of the north slope, where they form more open thickets under a submesophytic forest of mixed oaks (Quercus montana and Q. rubra), hickory (Carya ovalis), and red maple. Galax urceloata and low shrubs such as Vaccinium pallidum and V. erythrocarpum occur primarily in small openings in the shrub cover.
