Observation Narrative
This plot is similar to JWNF028 (which is located about 1 km to the ENE) but lacks a dense Rhododendron maximum shrub layer. Vegetation is a mixed forest of Quercus montana and Quercus rubra, with a sub-canopy of Acer rubrum, Magnolia fraseri, Oxydendrum arboreum, and a little Tsuga canadensis. The shrub is patchy, with Acer pensylvanicum the most common species. The herbaceous flora is quite sparse, with no herbaceous species achieving a cover of 1% in the sample. The stand is a classic example of an even-aged, dry-mesic oak forest with an understory of more tolerant mesophytic trees. This type of vegetation is extensively distributed on the upper slopes of Brushy Mountain east of Rt 16.
