Observation Narrative
This portion of the Rappahannock River contains numerous bouldery and gravelly, channel-shelf depositional bars that support herbaceous vegetation dominated by Justicia americana. These vary from semipermanently to seasonally flooded, and floristically from nearly monospecific to moderately diverse. The plot was positioned mostly on a relatively high sandy bar with a shorter hydroperiod than slightly lower adjacent bars, which support nearly monospecific Justicia. Within most of the plot area, the Justicia is somewhat less dense, and a number of low-cover herbaceous associates have become established.
