Observation Narrative
Plot captures scrub vegetation of a boulder bar along the edge of the Rappahannock River. The habitat is inundated at least some of the year and is frequently flood-scoured when exposed. The substrate, while seasonally wet and somewhat poorly drained, is hard-packed and drought-prone during its late-season exposure period. Vegetation is dominated by dwarfed, multistemmed, flood-trained Betula nigra and Platanus occidentalis. A moderate diversity of light-demanding, flood-tolerant herbs is associated, the most abundant of which is Chasmanthium latifolium.
