Observation Narrative
Poorly drained flatwoods with shallow hummock-and-hollow microtopography, shallowly flooded during wet parts of the year. Nearby to the south are large depression ponds with longer hydroperiods. There is likely a dense clay subsoil layer underlying this area at 0.3-0.5 m (M. Bradford, pers. comm.). Forest canopy is dominated by even-aged Quercus phellos probably less than 100 years old.
Recent logging nearby; one very old stump in plot. Site may have been cleared, or on the edge of a clearing, decades ago. An old, shallow ditch runs through the forest about 20 meters east of the plot.
