Observation Narrative
Plot was positioned on a somewhat xeric upland flat that likely has an impervious clay subsoil layer at 0.3 -0.6 m below the surface (M. Bradford, pers. comm.). Vegetation is a floristically depauperate oak / heath forest probably 80-100+ years old that apparently regenerated following logging of a pine stand. Even-aged Quercus alba dominate the overstory. Strong dominance of Ilex opaca in the understory suggests fire exclusion. A boggy swale is immediately adjacent to the plot, which lies at slightly higher elevation. Some plants more typical of the swale (e.g., Magnolia virginia, Vaccinium formosum, etc.) "spill over" onto the somewhat drier flat. The vegetation is very representative of oak / heath forests of sandy, sub-level sites of the Coastal Plain.
No recent disturbance. Very old stump holes and pine lightwood scattered through area. A large, recently cleared area is located immediately to the east.
