Observation Narrative
This is one of two plots (see also ROAN003) sampled in a large patch of xeric woodland vegetation occupying sandstone outcrops on the southeast flank of Catawba Mountain north of Rt. 311. This sample captures the more prevalent, semi-closed woodland variant of this vegetation. The overstory is composed of a more or less even mixture of stunted Quercus montana and Pinus virginiana, with some Carya glabra, Quercus stellata, and Q. marilandica also present. Herbaceous vegetation is rather patchy and somewhat sparse in this variant. Lichens, including Lasallia pensylvanica, L. papulosa, and Flavoparmelia baltimorensis, are abundant on the exposed sandstone slabs.
