Observation Narrative
Vegetation in this plot is representative of scrubby woodlands occupying an extensive area of outcrops on the southeast flank of Catawba Mountain south of Rt. 311. Pinus virginiana is the most important woody species, dominating in mixed stands with Quercus montana, Q. stellata, Q. marilandica, and Fraxinus americana. Openings on ledges and shelves provide habitat for a moderate diversity of herbaceous xerophytes. This is one of the largest patches of sandstone woodland in Virginia, perhaps covering as much as 40 ha, but it is very steep, rugged, and difficult to explore.
0-1 cm: irregular cover of leaf litter and pine needles - in depressions, cracks, and on ledges
1+ cm: pockets of soil on flat rock surfaces and in depressions - varying from light brown sand to medium brown sandy loam
