Observation Narrative
A somewhat open-canopy stand of xerophytic oaks (primarily Quercus coccinea and Q. montana), with sub-canopy Oxydendrum arboreum, Nyssa sylvatica, and Acer rubrum, and a dense shrub layer of mostly deciduous ericads. Galax urceolata is locally abundant in the herb layer. Oak recruitment is poor. the stand is representative of vegetation that covers extensive areas along the Appalachian Trail on the spur ridge between Trout Creek and Cove Mountain.
