Observation Narrative
Plot captures the best part of woodland vegetation occupying an impressively large and rugged metagabbro outcrop on the upper SE flank of Sugarloaf Mountain. Lithophytic vegetation here covers several hectares, consiting of open to semi-closed stands of stunted and gnarled red-cedars interspersed with patches of graminoids and open rock. Some of the more abundant lichens are Xanthoparmelia cf. conspersa (on open sunny rock surfaces), Flavoparmelia baltimorensis (on shaded rocks), Fuscidea recensa, and Lasalia pensylvanica. Despite its size, parts of the outcrop have been heavily disturbed by feral goats and by construction of a road and communications tower on the summit. Both disturbances have fostered the local proliferation of weedy exotics (Bromus japonicus, etc.), while herbivory by the goats appears to have significantly reduced cover and diversity of native species.
