Observation Narrative
Plot documents a foredune grassland with three abundant graminoids - Ammophila breviligulata, Uniola paniculata, and Panicum amarum var. amarum. A small, blown-out breach in the dune is located at the north end of the plot. On the inland side, the vegetation grades abruptly into topographically lower, interdunal wet grassland dominated by Spartina patens. The state-rare ground-cherry Physalis walteri forms a dense colony on the steep backslope of the foredune at the south end of the plot. Although the vegetation is natural, the dune was probably manipulated (i.e., built up) as part of a widespread dune stabilization program by the Corps of Engineers in the early part of the 20th century.
