Observation Narrative
Plot captures vegetation characteristic of the highest, interior dunes at False Cape State Park. Such dunes, while more stable than those closer to the ocean, are still subject to dramatically shifting sands and blowouts. Salt spray is minimized to the degree that Pinus taeda is the dominant tree and attains heights of 6-12 m. Vegetation is an open to very open pine woodland with scattered shrub-sized Quercus virginiana and patches of open sand supporting scattered clumps of Hudsonia tomentosa and other xerophytic dune herbs. The habitat is clearly subject to drought stresses and species richness is very low.
