Observation Narrative
Habitat is a low, narrow sand ridge with large Quercus virginiana surrounded by swamp forest. Pinus taeda occurs on margins of the ridge in the ecotone between the ridge and swamps. Chasmanthium laxum forms a ~continuous graminoid cover in the herb layer. Pines are about 32 m tall, with live oaks ca. 13 m tall beneath them. A 44 cm DBH pine had at least 105 annual growth rings; this tree was cored at breast height and the core did not quite reach center, therefore this tree may be as much as 120-125 years old. Because of the size of the oaks, a 1000 square meter releve was sampled. The vegetation is relatively species rich for an oak forest at False Cape.
