Observation Narrative
PLOT DIRECTIONS: On ridgetop of the Blue Ridge along the Appalachian Trail, NW of Shannondale. Plot is in Virginia and was sampled by West Virginia Natural Heritage Program ecologists as part of a study of high ridge sites with potential use for wind farms. LANDSCAPE CONTEXT: Adjacent to Appalachian Trail along the summit of the Blue Ridge. Trail is very weedy, but forest is still in reasonable condition. Campsite located 100 m from plot but no severe impacts apparent. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION: Ridgetop flattens out slightly on this part of the Blue Ridge to provide somewhat more mesic oak forest. Pockets of pawpaw repeat through this tall-canopied forest. Herbaceous layer is sparse. Gypsy moth damage is less severe than on more xeric parts of the ridge. REPRESENTATIVENESS: plot was placed to sample slightly more mesic oak forest on flat ridgetop within windy ridge polygon.
