Observation Narrative
The site is a rich floodplain along the Rivanna River at the base of Monticello Mountain. The floodplain here is relatively narrow and elevated several meters above mean river levels. Flooding regime is probably on the order of once every year or two. The area in and around the plot represents one of the most mature and least disturbed areas along a one-mile stretch below Monticello. Cover of exotics is relatively low, and nutrient-demanding native forbs form large patches. The plot adequately captures the diversity of trees, although significant cover is contributed by four large Platanus occidentalis, one large Carya cordiformis, one large Liriodendron tulipifera, one small Fraxinus americana, and one small Celtis occidentalis that overhang the plot.
