Observation Narrative
Plot is located in the same stand as ROCH003, but located on the slightly concave side slope of a ravine off the river, about 300 m to the southwest. Here, boulders and stone of the underlying Conococheague Formation are scattered over the slope, and soils have high pH, calcium, magnesium, and total base saturation. In this part of the stand, Thuja occidentalis more or less shares overstory dominance with Pinus strobus but dominates the sub-canopy layers. Fraxinus americana, Quercus muhlenbergii, and Acer saccharum are scattered in the understory, while Ostrya virginiana dominates an open shrub layer. site supports an exceptionally large stand of medium-age mixed forest with Thuja occidentalis the leading canopy dominant throughout. The herb layer is somewhat sparse but Carex eburnea forms several locally dense patches.
