Observation Narrative
This plot is similar to GWNF024 (located about 1.2 km to the SW). The site is a sheltered, very bouldery foot-slope that subtends the Cowpasture River. Geologic map coverage indicates that this site is underlain by shale, but the actual substrate is a mixture of bryophyte-covered limestone and calcareous red shale boulders. Forest vegetation is a rich mesophytic forest variably co-dominated by Acer nigrum, Acer saccharum, Tilia americana var. americana, Carya cordiformis, and Liriodendron tulipifera. Patch-dominants of the herb layer include Jeffersonia diphylla, Laportea canadensis, Asarum canadense, and Caulophyllum thalictroides, with large colonies of Sedum ternatum occupying the mossy boulders. The presence of Tsuga canadensis, Betula lenta, and Dryopteris intermedia reflects the cool microclimate of the sheltered, northwest-facing site. Upslope, there is an abrupt transition to outcrops forested by hemlocks, oaks, and dense colonies of Rhododendron maximum.
