Observation Narrative
Plot is located in a magnificent, old stand of beech, tulip-poplar, and oaks that constitutes an outstanding example of the late-seral mesophytic forests that occupy inner Coastsal Plain ravines. The site includes the lower and toe slope of a narrow side-ravine with moist, acidic, sandy loam soils. The dominant overstory trees range up to 85 cm DBH and form a mixed stand. However, beech dominates every sub-canopy layer while oaks and tulip-poplar are lacking recruitment. Barring future disturbance, the successional trajectory of this stand is clearly toward continuing and increasing dominance by beech.
