Observation Narrative
Plot captures a xerophytic oak/heath forest on Wallen Ridge, NE of Lovelady Gap. This vegetation occupies an upper-slope band, beneath richer, rocky montane oak-hickory forest on the crest, and cut-over mesophytic cove forest downslope. This stand has probably been undisturbed for ~100 years and is fairly strongly dominated by Quercus montana in the overstory, Oxydendrum arboreum in the sub-canopy, and Kalmia latifolia in the shrub layer. A large canopy gap has stimulated considerable oak regeneration, as well as the occurrence of a few low-cover herbs.
