Observation Narrative
The plot documents a very rich, mixed hardwood forest in the upper portion of a east-facing cove below High Point on Stone Mountain, elev. 3900 ft. Soils here are deep, dark, colluvial loams that support a lush herb flora patch-dominated by Laportea canadensis, Impatiens pallida, Caulophyllum thalictroides, and many other nutrient-demanding forbs. The overstory is mixed, with no clear dominants, containing Acer saccharum, Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Betula alleghaniensis, and Fraxinus americana. This stand is typical of rich cove forests in the upper coves of Stone Mountain, but the presence of typical high-elevation species such as Betula alleghaniensis, Dryopteris intermedia, Cimicifuga americana, etc. gives it some affinities to "northern hardwoods."
