Observation Narrative
This plot is located in the same extensive, poorly drained flatwoods as SPOT003, sampled in 2008. This areas supports mature, post-Civil War forests of large (50 - 95 cm DBH) hydrophytic oaks, sweetgum, and red maple. Two additional plots were sampled in 2009 to capture the range of compositional variation in the forest. This plot represents a substantial area that is strongly dominated by large Quercus michauxii, with only occasional Q. phellos and Q. alba also present. The shrub layer is quite open, containing patches of Clethra alnifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, and Ilex opaca. Herbs are fairly sparse, with no species attaining 1% cover. Shallow surface water, representing a slow sheet flow, was present over 40% of the plot at the time of the survey. A 1000 sq. meter quadrat was sampled to capture representative composition in all layers.
