Observation Narrative
This plot was located in a stunted, open, oak-hickory forest on a broad spur below the crest of Crawford Mountain. Soils are dry and rocky. Shrubs are virtually absent; herbs are diverse and moderately dense. Old, open-grown relics are scattered among younger tree regeneration, indicating probable partial clearing and grazing here before 1921. Compared to more mesic upper slopes of the mountain, this site has excellent recruitment of chestnut oak and hickories, This vegetation is extensive on the drier upper slopes and crests of Crawford Mountain below 3000 feet elevation.
