Observation Narrative
A young, secondary, rather rich stand of northern hardwoods in a northeast-facing cove-head. This site, located just below the saddle at Low Gap on Brumley Mountain, was probably cleared at one time and regenerated in a forest consisting largely of red maple. Younger yellow birch, sugar maple, buckeye, and white ash are now forming a mixed stand with the red maple. The herb layer is fairly lush and contains large colonies of typical northern hardwood species such as Dryopteris intermedia, Angelica triquinata, Maianthemum canadense, Viola blanda, and V. rotundifolia.
