Observation Narrative
Plot is in stand of medium-aged, second growth mixed oak / heath forest typical of the central Virginia Piedmont. Quercus alba, Q. coccinea, and Q. montana more or less co-dominate the overstory. The tall shrub layer consists primarily of Cornus florida and tree saplings; the low shrub layer is dominated by deciduous ericads (Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium spp.). Herbs are very sparse. Recruitment of the canopy oaks (especially of Q. montana) is surprisingly good and outnumbers that of Acer rubrum.
