Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot - a subxerophytic oak forest with dense evergreen Rhododendron understory - occurs locally on narrow crests and convex northerly slopes in the Virginia Southern Blue Ridge. Quercus montana and Rhododendron catawbiense are the leading dominants in the canopy and shrub layer, respectively, although Q. rubra and R. maximum occur plentifully in association. Herbs are sparse and limited to small openings in the shrub cover.
