Observation Narrative
Shrub thicket on top of massive sandstone slabs that form "The Channels." Shrubs rooted in crevices at top of the crevice-like channels and in accumulations of humus on flat surfaces. Many crustose and foliose lichens occur on rocks, with mosses on litter/humus under shrubs. Shrub stems are all small (< 2.5 cm DBH) and there are no clear dominants in this community. Rhododendron catawbiense, Kalmia latifolia, Gaylussacia baccata, and Vaccinium corymbosum are all common, with Viburnum cassinioides, Aronia melanocarpa, Leucothoe recurva, Prunus pensylvanica, and Sorbus americana also present at lower cover.
