Observation Narrative
Typical Quercus montana / Kalmia latifolia / Vaccinium pallidum oligotrophic forest along the crest of Massanutten Mountain, a system of several isolated ridges situated in the middle of the Great (Shenandoah) Valley. This vegetation covers the upper west slope and crest of this ridge from Rt 675 to Kennedy Peak, a distance of ca. 1.6 miles. Part of stand where the plot is located has very good oak recruitment and little Acer rubrum. Historical fires were frequent and sometimes severe in the Massanutten Mountain area. However, no evidence of recent fire could be found.
