Observation Narrative
Mixed oak forest on shale slope with abundant exposed, fine channery and dense patches of moss and reindeer lichens (Cladonia spp.) in places. Plot is located in a concavity which is somewhat more mesic than adjacent convex slopes. Species richness and herb cover are also higher, and low ericad cover is lower. Some oak recruitment is present, but outnumbered by invading sugar maple.
Superficial litter and humus, with much exposed mineral soil and channery.
A horizon = dark brown to yellow-brown silt loam with many small shale fragments.
