Observation Narrative
The habitat is a submesic debris field with large, deeply piled sandstone boulders, located just below the crest of Powell Mountain SW of Woodstock Gap. Similar boulderfields occur well downslope and are interspersed with areas of deeper soil development. Boulders range from <1m to >5m across. Lichen cover on rocks is dominated by Flavoparmelia baltimorensis and, more locally, Umbilicaria mammulata. Vegetation is a mature forest characterized by large (up to ca. 80 cm DBH), somewhat gnarled oaks. Quercus rubra and Q. montana co-dominate the stand, with minor associates of Carya spp., Tilia americana var. americana, and Betula lenta. Hamamelis virginiana and scrambling Parthenocissus quinquefolia are common in the understory.
