Observation Narrative
Plot was sampled on an extremely steep, ledgey metasedimentary outcrop/cliff overlooking the new river. Examination of bedrock and rock fragments, as well as the moderately calcareous soils, suggest a phyllitic metasiltstone. Due to dangerously steep conditions, plot boundaries were not measured and marked, and data were recorded in an estimated 10 x 10 meter quadrat. This habitat supports a scrubby, sparse woodland interspersed with patches of grassy vegetation and open rock. In the area of the plot, mixed woody scrub of Pinus virginiana, Juniperus virginiana, Quercus montana, and Fraxinus prevail; toward to top of the cliff, above the plot, tree-sized Juniperus and shrubs of Chionanthus virginicus are more common. Schizachyrium scoparium and Carex pensylvanica co-dominate the herb layer, with Selaginella rupestris covering some of the open rock surfaces. Conspicuous lichens and mosses include Xanthoparmelia sp., Usnea sp., Chrysothrix chlorina, Grimmia laevigata, Polytrichum sp.
