Observation Narrative
This plot documents shrubland vegetation on outcrops of Unicoi sandstone on the west side of Comers Rock summit, elevation 4050 ft. The community is very small (~300 sq. m.) and the habitat somewhat degraded by a trail leading from a popular viewing platform to the top of the outcrops and community. Due to the extreme steepness of the habitat, a 100 sq. meter (10 x 10 m) quadrat was visually estimated and sampled, but not actually measured. Vegetation is a dense, mixed shrubland interspersed with rock faces and ledges, with shrubs rooted on ledges and in crevices where organic matter or thin veneers of soil have accumulated. Kalmia latifolia is the most abundant shrub, occurring in mixture with Rhododendron catawbiense, Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium pallidum, Vaccinium erythrocarpum, and saplings of Betula lenta, Acer rubrum, Amelanchier laevis, and Acer pensylvanicum. The following herbs occurred sparsely on ledges with thin veneers of soil at the top of the community: Schizachyrium scoparium, Danthonia compressa, Coreopsis major, Dichanthelium acuminatum, Gaultheria procumbens, Lechea racemulosa, Solidago erecta, Eurybia chlorolepis. The exotics Rumex acetosella, Hieracium pilosella, and Digitaria sanguinalis occurred in distubed sandy soil along the trail edge at the top of the community.
Deep accumulations of organic matter in flat areas; gravel and sand in unvegetated depressions. Profile in shrub island:
0-15 cm: OM / roots
15+ cm: red-brown clay loam with coarse sand
Profile in unvegetated depression:
0-2 cm: gravel
2+ cm: sandy loam with gravel - red-brown
