Observation Narrative
This plot required a long, narrow (13.33 X 30 m) configuration to fit entirely on an elevated terrace / toe slope along Mine Run where it cuts a gap through Green Mountain. The site is thus a sheltered cove with very rocky, infertile soils that are largely interstitial between boulder deposits covered by a thick mantle of humus and duff. Vegetation is a mixed forest of hemlock, white pine, sweet birch, red maple, and oaks. Hemlocks in the stand are ca. 50% defoliated by adelgids. One Quercus montana snag stands just outside plot. A pitch pine just outside plot suggests historical fire. Large gap in center of plot from a very old downfall.
Over most of plot, organic matter is > 20 cm over deeply piled sandstone boulders and stones with interstitial organic matter. Profile at highest point on toe slope, where mineral soil is developed:
0-1 cm: leaf and needle litter
1-7 cm: OM/dense roots
7+ cm: white loamy sand with many stones
