Observation Narrative
Plot captures a medium-age oak (- hickory) forest on a very bouldery, west-facing slope of Waterfall Mountain near New Market Gap. The bouldery substrate appears to be composed of sandstone debris, which may thinly overlie calcareous shale at this elevation, judging from the moderately high calcium levels of soil samples collected here. Oaks in this stand are all single-stemmed. There is a large downfall (Quercus rubra) and gap just upslope of plot. The site was burned within the last 5-10 years. It is not known whether the fire was a wildfire or a Forest Service prescribed burn. Herbaceous plants are not diverse but many have higher cover than might be expected in this habitat. Based on the depauperate herb cover of nearby unburned parts of the stand, it appears that fire may have stimulated herb regeneration by removing litter and shrub competition.
