Observation Narrative
This plot documents a small but floristically interesting bog, whose physiognomy is best treated as an open woodland. In 1993, the most open, herbaceous portion of the bog was sampled with a 100 square meter plot (JBNF007), but this larger sample is more representative. The habitat and vegetation appear to have changed little since 1993, although a recent fire (USFS prescribed burn?) killed back some shrubs around the edge of the bog. Pinus rigida is the dominant tree in a very open stand. Alnus serrulata, much of it very low, dominates the shrub layer. The most abundant species of the herb layer are Rubus hispidus, Andropogon glomeratus var. glomeratus, Drosera rotundifolia, Lycopodiella alopecuroides, Osmunda cinnamomea, Carex atlantica ssp. atlantica, and Eriophorum virginicum. This bog differs from others in the Stony Creek Valley by having silty, rather than organic, soils.
