Observation Narrative
The plot is located in a bog occupying a slighly elevated flat adjacent to Cove Branch, with groundwater seepage/inputs from the adjoining upland slope. The site is immediately adjacent to a recently abandoned beaver pond on Cove Branch and a small part of the bog here has an area of exposed peat not covered by Sphagnum. Away from the stream, the peat is thick but semi-quaking over a major groundwater stratum. Large, charred snags in this area attest to the influence of past fires. Beaver-cut stumps are also present. Heavy deer browse was noted on Osmunda cinnamomea. The plot lies half in a shrubby woodland occupying deep, quaking peat, and half in open herbaceous vegetation occupying a slightly lower peatland. A few small Pinus rigida, Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, and Quercus palustris trees are present but most of the woody vegetation consists of shrubs, the most abundant of which are Kalmia latifolia and Alnus serrulata. The herb layer is stratified, with tall Osmunda cinnamomea, Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis, and Eriophorum virginicum most abundant. Rubus hispidus is abundant as a low, creeping vine. Other characteristic, lower-cover herbs are Carex atlantica ssp. atlantica, Carex gynandra, Parnassia asarifolia, Drosera rotundifolia, Juncus brevicaudatus, Juncus subcaudatus, Triadenum fraseri, Calamagrostis coarctata, Rhychospora capitellata, Viola mackloskeyi ssp. pallens, Lycopus uniflorus, and Glyceria canadensis. Sphagnum mosses cover 75% of the ground surface.
0-24 cm: peat deposits (locally quaking over shallow aquifer)
24 cm: gray clay with orange mottles
Sample collected on beaver pond cut bank, where soil beneath peat is exposed.
