Observation Narrative
A small but exemplary upland depression pond with a canopy of large willow oaks. The habitat is a true isolated wetland situated in a matrix of mature acidic oak-hickory and oak/heath forest. According to DOF, the entire stand originated in 1893, which probably represents the age of the oldest oaks. Plot covers about half to two-thirds of the pond, which was completely drawn down on at the time of sampling. Shrubs and herbs are rather sparse. Climacium americanum and Sphagnum sp. are the dominant bryophytes, each with about 15% cover over the quadrat.
