Observation Narrative
This site supports a small remnant of maritime swamp forest wedged between salt marshes on Magothy Bay and an agricultural field on the inland side. Hydrology of the site is probably best characterized as saturated by perched groundwater, although it may be inundated by occasional storm surges. Although somewhat disturbed by invasive weeds, this stand is dominated by some impressively large Nyssa biflora and could be quite old. Acer rubrum, Ilex opaca, and Magnolia virginiana are important understory species, and Pinus taeda saplings are invading the more open edges in the ecotone between the swamp and the marsh. The herb layer is fairly diverse, with Boehmeria cylindrica, Hydrocotyle verticillata var. verticillata, and several sedges contributing the highest cover.
